Perisphere continues to provide strategic planning and print design for the event programs and related materials for the annual Black History Month Luncheon of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH). Each year this organization, now over a century old, commemorates black history month through this event. Perisphere has consistently worked closely with their staff team in crafting a layout and design that includes graphic design from several artists, vendors, and organizations, as well as detailed lists of contributors, volunteers and supporters, ensuring that all the elements come together in a professional, coherent whole which speaks to the legacy and future of ASALH. This year’s event, held on February 25, 2017 in Washington, D.C., drew ASALH members and others from around the country to hear prominent speakers on the year’s chosen Black History Theme: “The Crisis in Black Education.” A related Featured Authors Event held on the same day showcased an array of prominent scholars, writers, and noteworthy books related to African American history and experiences.
The overall effort to produce this year’s Luncheon Journal (NOTE: low-res file) and the Authors Event handout began in December 2016, and included focused attention on developing a production schedule that met ASALH’s needs and established parameters for activities and working deadlines within the overall project timeline. Perisphere worked closely with ASALH staff through regular phone check ins on design and copy quality control, adjustments to the overall flow and order of the document, design layout, typesetting and from-scratch production of a number of pages and elements, as well as internal and external reviews at the conclusion of each round of design work.
